8 Types of Water Features

A water feature is a lovely touch to any landscape; we present to you eight fantastic options!

Backyard water features add elegance and luxury to even the humblest of homes. hey can make a statement at your front door, they can add a calming feature in your backyard or in a nook at the side of your house. What are your options? One or more of these eight types of  water features could be part of your outdoor landscape!

Popular Types of Water Features

1. Swimming Pool

A backyard swimming pool, above or in the ground, is desirable for many people. It is a great feature to bring family and friends together and get exercise at the same time! A professional landscape designer can craft a pool design that fits your property perfectly. Enjoy pool parties, cool afternoons, and relaxing poolside.

2. Fountain

Fountains come in all shapes and sizes; they may be small and ornamental, or they could take up significant space and be a major focal point. Unlike swimming pools, fountains can really be put anywhere and most people can afford them. You can purchase them at local garden centers, online or at Costco. A landscape company can then give you a level base and help you install the fountain so it is done right. All fountains give your landscape an element of relaxation with the soothing sound of flowing water.

3. Waterfall

Waterfall designs are just as plentiful but a little more expensive and should be installed professionally. A waterfall can flow into a garden pond or a gravel basin so it is “pondless.” It can flow from a slope or out of a wall. Few types of backyard water features are as magnificent as a waterfall! Dress it up with beautiful plants, and you have a natural-looking waterfall for your home.

4. Bird Bath

For simple joys, consider installing one or more bird baths around your house. You can even have circulating ones that provide sound like a fountain. Birds like to have an open yet private place to bathe and drink. The bird bath is a welcome oasis on hot summer days and even in deep winter. It is a lovely opportunity for bird watching!

5. Reflection Pond

A reflection pond is a geometrical pond with still and quiet water, perfect for looking into to see its reflections and taking time to reflect on life for a quiet moment. It is ideal for gardens designed for relaxation.

6. Garden/Fish/Frog Pond

Other ponds are for fostering your favorite water plants and animals. Garden ponds can draw in frogs and be home to koi fish. The Landscape Design Center can help you design and implement your garden pond with exotic or native plants.

7. Flowing Stream

Have you ever considered having a stream run through your yard? It is possible to have a stream, either modern or rustic, run through your backyard, along the edge of your backyard, etc. It can be combined with waterfalls and garden bridges for an extra special effect.

8. Rain Garden

A rain garden is a low spot in your yard planted with native plants. The plants help filter the rainwater or any other water runoff before letting it filter into the ground. If you would like to learn more, The Landscape Design Center in Edgewater, MD, is happy to help you!
