Low-Maintenance Backyard Landscaping Ideas

Low-maintenance landscapes are great for busy families! Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Unless you have a mostly green thumb and consider gardening your hobby and passion, you likely want landscaping that won’t need much work. Many people are very busy with family life and careers and don’t have the time or money to spend on landscaping care. That’s why we’ve put together some of the best low-maintenance backyard landscaping ideas.

Top Low-Maintenance Backyard Landscaping Ideas

Artificial Grass Turf

Artificial grass is an option that is more appealing than some might think at first. It has developed to become more durable and realistic than it was decades ago, making it the perfect way to add rich green turf to your yard without the mowing or watering.

Groundcovers

Groundcovers are mostly low-maintenance. They can cut down on the amount of mulch you have to put down, as well as, the amount of weeds that come up. If you have a steep slope or a sizable lawn, you could take out the effort of mowing grass by designating some of the square footage to groundcover beds. Over time this can pay off greatly.

Native and Hardy Perennials

If you are keen on having some flowers in your landscape, see what native, drought-tolerant, and zone-specific plants work for your area. The happier your plants are in your backyard’s natural growing conditions, the less maintenance they will need.

Evergreen Shrubs

Evergreen shrubs are pretty straightforward. They might need a slight trim after a long while, but are otherwise self-sufficient. They will also give your backyard nice color  year round. Just make sure to get the right size for your space. Most plants start small and cute, but some can outgrow the space very quickly and become unruly fast. All shrubs come in dwarf variety and that is the key to a perfectly selected plant that is low maintenance.

Limited Trees

The more trees you have in your yard, the more you have to maintain. Trees can overcrowd when they grow large; you also need to keep them trim, watch out for termites and diseases, and cut out dead limbs. Fall is also a consideration when having to clean up all the fallen leaves. A few well-planted trees is easier to maintain than a dozen.

Functional, High-Quality Hardscaping

Every backyard needs a deck or patio for enjoying your space. Low-maintenance, well placed hardscapes will last for a very long time and take out some of the work to maintain a lawn or flower beds.

Bird-Friendly Features

Let birds help you remove invasive insects and bugs, including mosquitos! Invite them to your backyard with bird baths, birdhouses, and appropriate plants for perching and nest-building.
