Lawn Care Tips to Use This Fall

Lawn Care Tips to Use This Fall

Here are some of our best lawn care tips for the fall.

Temperatures are starting to cool, which means that many homeowners are thinking about fall outdoor maintenance tasks like cleaning the gutters and placing mulch around trees. However, don’t forget about lawn care! While grass growth slows during the fall months, it does not stop completely. Here are some of our best lawn care tips for the fall.

Don’t Stop Mowing Yet

Grass will keep growing until temperatures drop to freezing, and you should continue your normal lawn care maintenance until then.  Keep your grass between 2.5-3 inches tall. Letting it grow too long puts you at an elevated risk of snow mold and other diseases. However, cutting it too short can make it less resilient and reduce its ability to make it through the winter.

Continue Watering If Needed

Watering thoroughly and deeply is a big part of summer lawn care, but it might need to be incorporated into your fall routine too. Fall rains are absorbed more efficiently since the heat is not as intense and evaporation is not as fast. However, if you go without rain for an extended period, keep an eye on your lawn and plants to see if they need more moisture. Your lawn needs about an inch of rain per week in the fall.

Aerate the Soil

Aeration uses a specialized machine to punch holes in your lawn. This breaks up the thatch layer and allows grass roots to receive more sunlight, nutrients, water, and fertilizer. The best time to aerate is before fertilizing or before overseeding the lawn. The Landscape Design Center can help you maintain your lawn with fall lawn care including aeration and overseeding.

Overseed to Fill in the Turf

Overseeding is another essential piece of fall lawn care, and you should complete it at the same time you aerate. Adding grass seed in the fall allows roots to get established and can fill in bare spots or patchy areas that developed over the summer. This gives you a head start on your lawn for next year and gives the grass just enough time to get started before freezing temperatures arrive.
