A retaining wall does its hardest work in winter and early spring, when saturated ground pushes against it and freeze-thaw movement tests every joint. Building in fall gives the wall a head start.

When you install a retaining wall in autumn, the compacted base and gravel backfill have time to settle evenly over the cooler months. 

By the time heavy spring rain and snowmelt arrive, the system has already found its footing rather than shifting under its first real load.

Excavation, base compaction, and block setting all go more precisely when crews are not fighting summer heat or the saturated, sloppy ground of early spring. Materials handle better, and compaction holds.

How to install a retaining wall

Knowing how to install a retaining wall is less about stacking blocks and more about what happens below and behind them. A wall is only as strong as its base and its drainage.

Plan, locate utilities, and check the grade

Before any digging, the wall line is staked out and underground utilities are marked by calling 811. The designer confirms the slope, the soil, and where water needs to exit.

Excavate and build a compacted base

A trench is dug deep and wide enough for a foundation of compacted, clean angular crushed stone. 

As a rule of thumb, plan to bury roughly the bottom course, about one inch for every foot of finished wall height, and set the base width to roughly one-third of the wall height. This is the foundation the entire wall rests on, and rushing it is the most common cause of later failure.

Stack blocks with the right batter

Wall units are set on the leveled base, staggered so joints do not line up, and stepped slightly back into the slope. 

That backward lean, called batter, helps the wall push into the hill it retains rather than away from it.

Build drainage in, not on

Clean angular stone (a #57-type aggregate is a common standard) goes directly behind the wall face, separated from native soil by filter fabric so fines cannot clog it. 

A perforated drain pipe at the base carries water to a lower outlet. This gravel-and-pipe system is what relieves the water pressure that destroys walls.

Backfill in lifts and cap the wall

Backfill is added and compacted in shallow layers, not dumped all at once, so it does not settle into voids later. Caps finish the top, lock the units, and shed water away from the joints.

What a retaining wall costs in the Mid-Atlantic

Cost depends on height, length, material, access, drainage, and whether the wall needs engineering. 

As a general planning range often cited for segmental block, materials run roughly $30 to $60 per linear foot, and contractor-installed walls commonly land in the range of $60 to $120 or more per linear foot depending on the factors above. Retaining wall mistakes that cause early failure

Most walls that fail were built against physics, not because of it. The recurring culprits:

No real drainage 

By far the leading cause. Without a gravel column and an outlet, water builds pressure behind the wall until it bows or blows out. Industry inspectors attribute a large share of wall failures to drainage problems rather than structural design, which tells you where the risk really lives. 

A wall with no way to shed water is holding back saturated soil and hydrostatic pressure at the same time, a load it was never designed to carry.

Dirty or clay backfill

Native clay holds water and pressure instead of releasing it, so packing it directly behind the wall works against everything the drainage system is trying to do. 

Clean angular stone drains fast and compacts tight, and filter fabric between the stone and the native soil keeps fines from washing in and silting up the gravel.

Skipping geogrid on taller walls

Segmental walls past roughly three to four feet, or any wall holding a load above it, need geogrid, layers of mesh that extend back into the soil and tie the wall face into the hillside. 

Without that reinforcement, the blocks rely on weight alone and tend to rotate or slide outward under sustained pressure. 

A weak or uncompacted base

Voids and settling start at the bottom and travel up, so a base that was rushed or poorly compacted shows up later as a cracked cap or a bulging face. 

A proper foundation of compacted, clean angular stone gives the entire wall something stable to rest on and distributes the load evenly across the trench. 

Backfilling too fast

Dumping fill in one pass instead of compacted lifts creates voids that settle and shift later, pulling the wall out of alignment after the crew has left. 

Backfill should go in shallow layers, each compacted before the next is added, so the soil behind the wall supports rather than surprises it. 

Ignoring the permit and engineering rules

Height, load, and location can all trigger permit or engineering requirements, and Maryland counties set their own thresholds. 

Walls above a certain height, walls carrying a surcharge load like a driveway, walls near a property line, or walls in a Critical Area often require a permit, an engineered design, or both.
