Autumn is that time when the energy of summer declines, settling into the dormancy of winter. Fall is an excellent time to take care of your home and landscape; in fact, there are some great fall landscape maintenance practices that one should follow for the best results in spring.

Top Fall Landscape Maintenance Tasks

Pruning Trees and Shrubs

Fall is a great time to prune trees and shrubs. You will want to remove dead branches, diseased branches, and any cross branching or suckers. In the fall, plants are going into dormancy, so you won’t have to worry as much about the plants’ growth hormones when you prune.

Aerating and Overseeding the Lawn

The cool, moist earth that comes with fall weather makes it easier for seeds to grow. If your lawn looks patchy after a harsh spell of summer weather, you can fix that by having a professional dethatch, aerate and overseed your lawn. Getting rid of the thatch will help open up the soil, get rid of fungus, and give seed the space to flourish. Pulling up plugs of dirt will loosen the soil and aerate it. Then the new grass seeds can be spread over bare spots, and even existing lawn, to give you a fuller feel.

Treating Plant Diseases

Plant diseases can flourish, remain, and spread again from fall through spring. If you think there are insects boring into your plants or fungi wreaking havoc, you can get the best help from a landscape maintenance professional. In Edgewater, The Landscape Design Center is here to help you with both landscape designs and fall cleanup!

Mulching

Mulch insulates plant roots from extreme temperatures, traps moisture, and adds nutrients to the soil as it breaks down. It also limits weed growth. Mulching in the fall may seem counterintuitive, but it is better than going into the winter with bare dirt beds.

Fertilizing

When done right, soil amendment will increase plant health when performed in the fall. A landscaper can perform a soil test to determine its pH and nutrient composition and make adjustments as needed. The right chemical conditions will help your landscape flourish! As long as the temperature is about 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the plant roots will continue to take in nutrients from the soil, making fall a good time to make these changes.

Cleaning Up

Fall has many wonderful flowers, shrubs, and trees that give landscapes vibrant colors. Eventually, some of these plants may lose their leaves. The Landscape Design Center can help you with fall cleanup for a tidy winter! That way you don’t save everything for the spring clean up. Get a jump on it now.

Bulb Planting

Fall is a great time to get your bulbs in. That way when winter starts to get you down in March/April, your bulbs will start to pop up and give you color. So get that color in NOW. You will be thanking yourself in April!
