Our Fall Garden Design Ideas

Check out these bright and colorful fall landscaping ideas!

Fall is a beautiful season with its own colors and charm. It is also the time when the colors of spring and summer fade, making way for the cold winter. Your home doesn’t have to look boring and bare in fall or winter; in the fall, you can make the most of the season’s colors with these fall garden design ideas. If you would like to learn more about what you can do with your garden in Maryland, The Landscape Design Center is happy to help.

Incorporate Warm Colors

The primary way to bring out the best of autumn in your landscape is to incorporate plants with warm colors like red, orange, and yellow. These classic fall colors can appear in all plant species, including flowers, vines, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and trees. Japanese maples, Goldenrods, and Chrysanthemums are tried and true examples of autumnal plants.

Add Some Muted Colors

You don’t have to limit your color palette to these three colors in your yard, either. You can explore plenty of other options that use muted colors, like lavender, tan, and gold. You could use plants with these colors as backdrop plants, ground covers, or focal points.

Keep It Green

Don’t overlook the greenery in your fall garden design; having at least one evergreen visible at every point in your property will let you see some green color even throughout the winter. Incorporating plants with green foliage will also give some much-needed contrast to your vibrant fall colors.

Vary Plant Height, Shape, and Texture

Good fall garden designs use contrast to make a landscape hold the viewer’s gaze. You can create contrast with shapes, colors, and textures. For example, you can contrast round, small plants with larger plants with radiating, spiky leaves or dense, dark shrubs with light and wispy grasses.

Design with Lighting in Mind

Did you know that lighting can influence your fall garden design? The angle of the sunlight throughout the day during autumn can play a role in how you highlight certain plants or hardscapes. At a certain time of the afternoon, you could illuminate your Goldenrod, for example.

Don’t Forget Avenues to Take in the Scenery

The plants are just one part of the picture. Take pathways, patios, decks, and other features you might have or want to include in your property into account. The Landscape Design Center can turn all your fall garden design ideas into a landscape that wows.
