Preparing Your Lawn for the Spring

Lawn Care From The Landscape Design Center
You want everything to spring back to life, and there are many ways you can get your lawn to do it.

With winter finally getting close to its end, it’s time to begin thinking about how you’re going to renovate your landscape in the spring. Your lawn goes through a lot during winter, having to endure all of the cold weather. Grass, trees, and shrubs become weaker and hungrier due to being dormant for the past winter season. You want everything to spring back to life, and there are many ways you can get your lawn to do it.

Get Some Cleaning Done

If there is any debris around your lawn, such as twigs and leaves, you want to get it all cleaned up. You could go with a rake or use an air blower if you want to make the process easier. By keeping your lawn clean, it will be easier for grass to soak in fertilizers.

Apply Fertilizer and Pre-Emergent Weed Killer On Your Lawn

In the early stages of spring, fertilizer and pre-emergent weed killer can go a long way. It keeps crabgrass from growing on your lawn. Once six to eight weeks have passed, do a second application, this time including a broadleaf weed killer. The best way for you to handle crabgrass is to prevent it from growing in the first place.

Make Sure You’re Mowing Your Lawn Early and Constantly

Many homeowners believe that mowing weekly is sufficient during the spring season. The problem is that it’s dangerous to let grass grow too tall. You run the risk of stunting the roots, rendering your lawn unable to reproduce like it once could.

Instead of mowing weekly, aim to cut your grass every five days during the first six weeks of the spring season. This helps ensure your lawn becomes thicker and more full.

Use the Right Type of Mulch

After you have cared for your lawn, edge all of your beds out, trim back all of the dead shrubs you have, then get your mulch replaced. Hardwood bark mulch is a great option, and we suggest using it more than ground wood chips because hardwood bark mulch will last your lawn longer.

Get Your Trees Trimmed

Investigating will need to be done to see if your tree branches are dead from the winter. Dead branches can be dangerous because they might fall and cause damage to people and your property. If you’re worried about dead branches causing problems, consider getting some professional help removing the branches for you. Pros know how to remove pesky branches in a safe manner that will protect you and your property.
